A Quick Intro: Materials Science is an upperclassmen
elective science course here at Blair. During this semester
course, students study the topics of synthetic materials,
toxic materials, and metallurgy. There are projects that go
along with each unit as well. The project that goes with the
synthetics unit is synthetic shoes. Each student made their
own pair of use using at least four different synthetic materials.
Then they used the shoes on a trek around the campus of Blair,
which unlucky period 2 had to do in 8 inches of snow!. Some
students chose to display their shoes to the world by wearing
them all day. Each student also write an in depth report on
a certain kind of synthetic, for example acrylics or PVC.
During the toxic materials unit, students made chlidren's
toy for the kids in Child Development to play with. The toys
had to be made from completely non-toxic material, everything
down to the adhesvies used. Finally, for the metallurgy unit,
students polished different metals and viewed their crystal
structure under a microscope. More infomration is on the pages
